Police at the Chiweta border in Rumphi have arrested two Tanzanian nationals after they were allegedly found in possession of US$1.1 million (about MK1.9 billion) without the required documentation.
The suspects, aged 28 and 24, were travelling from Lilongwe to Tanzania when police stopped and searched their vehicle during a roadblock operation.
According to police, officers discovered the cash hidden inside the vehicle, and the two failed to produce documents authorising its possession. The money and the vehicle have since been seized.
The suspects are expected to appear in court to answer charges of possessing foreign currency without supporting documentation and money laundering.
