The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) says its investigation into the 2025 Urban Music People (UMP) Festival uncovered allegations of sexual harassment, exploitation and inadequate welfare arrangements involving young women who participated as models. According to findings highlighted in a report by the Malawi Institute of Journalism (MIJ), some participants allegedly slept outdoors during the festival, while others reportedly received little food and were forced to cover their own basic expenses. The Commission also found allegations that accommodation was offered to some participants in exchange for sexual favours. The investigation was launched following complaints raised by some of the young women who took part in the event held at Cape Maclear. MHRC says its findings point to serious concerns around participant welfare, safeguarding and the treatment of young women involved in the festival. UMP Festival is yet to share their side of the story.
