Thousands of inmates across Malawi could be released earlier than expected after the Malawi Prison Service announced a 12-month reduction in prison sentences for most prisoners.
The sentence reduction applies to all eligible inmates, except those serving life sentences.
According to reports, the decision is expected to help reduce overcrowding in the countryβs prisons, making it easier to provide inmates with adequate food, medical care and accommodation.
Malawiβs prisons have long struggled with congestion, with inmate numbers regularly exceeding the facilitiesβ intended capacity.
